Przygonski: one step from victory

(17.08.2018) In 2013 Krzysztof Holowczyc became the first Pole who won FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies. It seems that this trophy will be in Polish hands again this season thanks to Jakub Przygonski. After eight out of eleven rounds Orlen Team driver tops the standings, ahead of his biggest rivals – Vladimir Vasiliev from Russia and Martin Prokop from Czechia.

33-year old Przygonski is one of the most multi-talented Polish drivers. He started his motorsport career in the age of 13, when he began to race on motorbikes. Warsaw-born competitor was successful in enduro rallies as well as in motocross events. In 2007 he joined Orlen Team and he was set to tackle the desert. It United Arab Emirates Przygonski had his debut in cross-country rally. Less than two years later – in 2009 Przygonski decided to take on the greatest challenge for motorcyclist – the Dakar Rally, which he eventually finished as the best placed newcomer. One year before his Dakar debut Jakub began his drifting adventure, which was completely different experience for an off-road driver. Drifting means keeping the car in perfectly balanced and long powerslides on tarmac. In 2015 ambitious Przygonski won Polish Championship title in this discipline and repeated this achievement two seasons later.

It was 2015 when Orlen Team representative decided to quit racing on motorbikes and committed fully to competing in cars. Baja Poland 2015 was the event, where Przygonski covered his first competitive kilometers behind the wheel of off-road rally car. On the beginning of 2016 season Jakub made his debut in Dakar Rally (in cars category). Next season he improved his result, when he reached the finish in 7th position. His good, consistent form was confirmed later in the season, which he finished as runner-up in FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies.

Now is the time to finish first? It seems that Przygonski is on his way to win the most prestigious series in off-road rallying. From the beginning of the season Pole shows impressive performance combined with consistency. He already won three out of eight rounds, four times he was second and only once failed to finish in top three. Thanks to this run, Przygonski leads the World Cup standings before Columna Medica Baja Poland. He managed to score 57 points more than second-placed Vasiliev, who already have FIA World Cup victory under his belt (in 2014). Meanwhile Martin Prokop, currently third, is 74 points behind Przygonski. There are 120 points yet to score in three remaining rounds of the season.

In his FIA World Cup campaign Przygonski uses MINI John Cooper Works Rally – the car prepared by German X-Raid team. Pole’s co-driver is experienced Belgian Tom Colsoul. Przygonski is not only talented but educated too. He holds an engineering degree.
